Making a Little Go a Long Way

This unusually small master bathroom was renovated to meet the homeowner's budget needs, while giving them the pizazz they were longing for--which proves you can remodel a space beautifully, even when you are watching your remodeling dollars. It's especially important to understand what is most important to you, helping us plan and design with those factors in mind. Most important to this family was to update their bath, and transform their master bath from "We can't stand this any longer." to "Wow, this is awesome."

In this master bath, the original 5 x 5 footprint would have to be maintained, as there was no adjacent space to borrow additional square footage. To make better use of limited floor space, a wall between the shower and the toilet was removed, opening the space up and adding a bit of elbow room inside the shower.

A small wooden vanity was replaced with a pedestal sink, complete with new faucet. This also visually opened the space. To replace a surface mount medicine cabinet--another space stealer, we re-framed the wall for a recessed medicine cabinet. The existing light fixture was reused and the globes turned upward, versus their original downward position, to redirect the light.

The new shower space, no longer enclosed--features 6" ceramic tile, with a decorative listello created with 2 x 2 tiles, with 45 degree clipped corners and gorgeous, yellow glass accent pieces were added.

Two shower shelves with decorative edges were incorporated to hold bath products.ShowerShelves.JPG

The shower head height was increased to better accommodate taller folks and a stylish rain-shower head was installed. The shower rod is an attractive 36" right angled corner rod with a brushed nickel finish.

Extra storage space was created with two, custom built shelves above the toilet. And, instead of a using a toilet paper holder that would jut out--stealing space--two niches were custom built to hold toilet paper and other bath items.

To brighten the space, the owners selected a cheery Pittsburgh Paint, low VOC paint color; Beeswax.
The original tile floor was also demolished and replaced with 6" ceramic tile, laid diagonally.

New door, trim and door hardware were also installed to complete the newly renovated bathroom.
Villa coordinated the donation of the original plumbing fixtures to a local materials reuse center. The homeowners will receive a letter for their donation and will be ready to share it with their accountant for next tax season.

We were very pleased with Villa, Jeff, Joanne and the staff. They were so helpful. I couldn't have been more pleased. They were wonderful with keeping within our budget. Jeff worked with us thoroughly to make sure that happened.

It Feels Good!

Iris.JPGIt's a dreary, grey day-but it still feels good!

Elizabeth Wozniak-Shelby gave me this iris last year. Villa remodeled several projects for her and her husband, Bert. We bumped out a kitchen, added a powder room, built a deck, added two porches and re-sided and painted the exterior of their Eastport Annapolis home.

So, what feels good?

I've been watching this flower grow since I planted it last year. I was excited to see the buds and couldn't wait to see them bloom. Every time I look at this flower, I think of Elizabeth and Bert. I think of the work we do. I think of the care, and pride we put into every remodeling project. I think of the relationships we have with our customers, and it feels good.

Happy Spring,

Joanne

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), of which Villa Builders is a member, shared an April 15, 2010 press release from the Joint Center of Housing Studies. The press release stated that "Home improvement spending will recover this year, according to the the Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA) released today by the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University. The LIRA suggests annual spending will accelerate, with nearly five percent growth in 2010."

In the beginning of March, we were seeing a dramatic increase in home remodeling interest. This forecast is certainly a welcomed bright spot on the horizon.
